Stovetop Butter Pecan Recipe with Ghee – Southern Classic Made Easy (VIDEO)

There’s something undeniably comforting about the warm, nutty flavors of butter pecans. They are a classic treat from the deep South and traditionally made with butter. This recipe takes a delightful twist by using ghee, bringing an even richer depth of flavor, allowing even those with dairy sensitivities to enjoy it.

Whether enjoyed on their own, sprinkled over desserts, or mixed into baked goods, butter pecans are a simple yet irresistible indulgence.

Why Use Ghee Instead of Butter?

ghee

Ghee, or clarified butter, is a staple in many cuisines for its deep, toasted flavor and high smoke point. Unlike butter, it is lactose- and casein-free, making it a great alternative for those with dairy sensitivities. Plus, ghee's naturally nutty aroma enhances the pecans beautifully.

Many times through my blog I mention that Cooking with kids is Important. Children should understand where food comes from, how it's made and how to choose whole foods, etc. I think it's absolutely an essential life skill!

This recipe was entirely my kids idea to make because they love butter pecans and of course they are southern children and it's in their blood.

Here are a few more recipes for you with pecans:

First is a Southern classic but with little bit of a twist, where pecans play a major roll: Inna's Peach Pie.

Second is one is from my childhood:

And the last is my husband's favorite, something that he ate in his childhood and still enjoys:

How to Ensure Your Ghee Is 100% Casein-Free

If you have a severe dairy allergy, consider the following:

  1. Use Grass-Fed Ghee – High-quality brands often have lower residual milk proteins.

  2. Triple-Strained or Lab-Tested Ghee – Some brands specifically test their ghee for casein and lactose.

  3. Make Your Own Ghee – If you want full control, you can make ghee at home by slow-cooking unsalted butter and straining it thoroughly.

Why should you eat Butter Pecans?

  • They contain vitamin E and polyphenols, which help fight inflammation and protect cells from damage.

  • Pecans are high in monounsaturated fats, which help lower bad cholesterol (LDL) and promote heart health.

  • Pecans are loaded with omega-3 fatty acids and essential nutrients like thiamine (B1), which support cognitive function and may reduce the risk of neurodegenerative diseases.

  • Despite their slightly sweet taste, pecans have a low glycemic index, helping to stabilize blood sugar levels.

  • They contain magnesium, phosphorus, and calcium, all essential for bone strength and density.

  • Pecans provide protein, healthy fats, and B vitamins, making them an excellent snack to keep you energized throughout the day.

Only 3 ingredients needed!

Pecans - use whole halves and not the ones that are broken and are usually sold near other essential items for baking. For the best digesting and micro-nutrients absorption, soak and dry them before using in this recipe. We didn't do this in the video because the kids were rushing to get these made.

Ghee or Clarified butter - in the video I used homemade, and using a good quality product is a must, here is the link to the one I prefer. Ghee and clarified butter are not the same but interchangeable.

Salt - Oh yes, no sugar but salt. Good salt such as Celtic or pink salt (we used in the video) is a great choice. These nuts are very high in fat and with additional fat, you will satisfy your sweet cravings without sugar added.

Let's do it...
