Hide and Seek Strawberry Muffins is a Perfect Recipe for cooking with kids
I was always big on how important it is to teach children to cook. I see that two generations now in the US don't know how to cook. I often hear a fracas such as "I can but choose to not " or "Why bother if I can buy"?.
The bottom line is yes, everyone can follow a recipe direction but they never got a habit to learn how; they never practiced as a child, and most adults thought to take care of other things that are important and food prep is only for a special occasion, when holidays come, etc.
Most will agree with me to learn how to swim is super important - it can safe a life! But to teach your child how to cook can save a health! As a result... a healthy life for long term!
Have you ever seen this book? Pretend Soup, written by Mollie Katzen and Ann Henderson, and we are going to share with you all.
It's a wonderful thing to have around if you have a child. Children are like sponges; they do and repeat what they see daily. In most cases, kids love to watch adults... how the biggest magic happens in the kitchen, the transformation! The action that moves one item not so much appealing to eat as it is (flour, let's say) to something absolutely delicious can be to the point it can be called addictive. Why does that happen? Why are kids so much in love with food and pretend food? We all did that in our past. My baby girl every time we go to the park, makes something for me out of leaves, branches, grass, etc. she would look me in my eyes and ask so sweetly:
Mommy, tea? soup? And give me a bunch of leaves. LOL
This book is so fun, easy to follow the recipe and my oldest is reading and giving directions on what to do to his siblings. It's team work, messy, but useful activities.
It's a great thing to let them be messy and taste ingredients, to learn how to use a kitchen tools, etc.
This recipe is not a difficult task at all. It doesn’t take too long to make and bake. Any quick breads like muffins or banana bread is a great choice to start with.
Teach your kids about seasonal foods
Since we are going pick up strawberries after school, it's the season here in South Carolina, to bake or make something with them is a natural thing to do.
Today they found the recipe from this favorite book: Hide and Seek Strawberry Muffin, and the boys said, "Let's do it"...
What do I need to make Hide and Seek Strawberry Muffins?
Strawberries - since we practically sink one whole strawberry inside the muffins, the smaller berry is better.
Milk - always whole milk I'm using in my recipes.
Flour - my first choice is whole wheat flour, and we used this brand.
Eggs - let your child break the egg, oh yes, it's a favorite thing to do.
Vanilla extract - it's always nice addition to any muffins.
Sugar - I always using raw cane organic sugar.
Butter - in my recipes I'm using grass - fed a good quality butter.

Ingredients
1&1/2 cups whole wheat flour
2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon pink salt
1/4 cup raw cane sugar (add more sugar, if you like the sweetness of store-bought muffins)
2 eggs
1 cup whole milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
4 tablespoons melted butter
small strawberries (12 total--1 for each muffin)
Few tablespoons sugar for the strawberries
Directions
Preheat the oven to 375F.
Put paper cups in pan. We used a different set up this time, we used a regular baking sheet and laid out the Mason jar rings, then we stuck inside of them the paper cups.
Crack eggs into a bowl. And add milk and vanilla extract.
Add melted butter to the bowl, too, and whisk all together.
Into another bowl add: flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt and sugar. Whisk all together.
Now, pour wet ingredients into dry ingredients bowl, mix all together with a spatula. Under mixing is better then over mixing.
Pour batter into each paper cup, filling up halfway.
Dip each strawberry in sugar. Push fruit into center of muffin batter.
Bake 15 minutes. Or until muffin reaches 180F. Use kitchen thermometer.
Cool down for few minutes and remove from the pan your muffins. Take a big bite, and don't forget to make this recipe again with other fruit. Make hide and seek muffins with blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, peaches, grapes, figs, etc. Make your creativity to be a fun thing.
