I must admit I'm not big on cocktails. Generally speaking, I'm more of a wine person. I never understood cocktails and believe me, I have tried quite a few in my life. Drinking overly sweet alcoholic drinks, that initially might be enjoyable but leave you with an awful headache the next day, doesn't entice me. The amount of sugar that you can get in one drink is above the roof.

The staple ingredient called simple syrup (sugar & water) is present in almost every cocktail that you order at the bar. And yes, it is a well-known fact that alcoholic drinks can contain lots of sugar, as well as alcohol itself.

WHAT IS KOMBUCHA, & WHY YOU SHOULD USE IT IN SLUSHIES?

Kombucha is a fermented tea drink that tastes absolutely delicious! With a very distinctive taste that’s somewhere between acidic, fragrant and fruity, it’s very different from most drinks. It’s amazingly versatile too! It’s perfect as it is or as a mixer, which is what makes it such an exciting experience for our taste buds!

Kombucha is growing in popularity around the world. There are numerous health benefits that come from drinking kombucha. Learn more about it by visiting this page.

I love it, my family loves it and I haven't lived one day without kombucha for the last 6 years. The list of health benefits is long.

Here just a few:

  • Kombucha contains an antibiotic resistant yeast called Saccharomyces Boulardii. It is resistant to stomach acid and cannot be killed by antibiotics.

  • Kombucha helps the liver to detoxify.

  • Kombucha helps with constipation and diarrhea. S boulardii is being used to treat all sorts of bowel disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO).

  • Kombucha reduces joint pain because it contains acetic acid. Acetic acid not only helps to stabilize blood sugar, but is also an analgesic pain reliever. Kombucha has anti-arthritic elements that help remove inflammation that cause toxins to accumulate in the joints. Kombucha helps the preservation of collagen as it has high levels of glucosamine. It does so by increasing hyaluronic acid, which is key for the lubrication in your joints.

As a result, many soda companies are losing business because the popularity of kombucha is growing. But unfortunately, many people, like my husband. grew up in a time when diet soda and margarine were considered the way to go. With the older generation it is a difficult task to steer the wheel into a different direction and away from sugar and sugar substitute sodas.

Every day I search to find new information and studies about macrobiotics, probiotics and prebiotics. It is the search for information about our health and the gut connection. Keeping your gut happy requires work, especially in the world of sterilization we live in today. That is why kombucha just like many other ferments (sauerkraut, kimchi, kefir), comes as a handy tool for better health and better well-being.

WHY I LIKE TO USE KOMBUCHA IN SLUSHIES WITH SPIRITS?

Kombucha’s unique tartness and funkiness pose a learning curve when integrating the beverage into cocktails. It takes balance to not overwhelm a drink with its strong flavors. I recommend that you start with simple flavors and swap it in place of the carbonated element in slushies. Replacing soda with a neutral-flavored kombucha is an easy way to start getting used to this amazing drink.

I make kombucha at home and it's so easy and doesn't require any special equipment or skill. I believe that a 6 year old child can make it but if you prefer store bought, just about every store in the US sells it.

But you should remember kombucha is a living organism, and can be taught to get used to for generations to digest most types of sugars.

New studies show even SCOBY helps to digest lactose for a culinary application. Anything is possible with kombucha.
